How the numbers move
An epoch lasts 24 hours. Work is the sum of accepted shares, each counted as two to the power of its extra difficulty bits, so a share at 24 bits counts sixteen times one at 20. When the epoch closes, the miners' part of the budget is divided by the total, which is why more miners make each unit of work worth less. See cellar.log for what each closed epoch paid.
